Wind turbines account for more than 30% of new power generation in the United States.

Surprisingly, transportation may be wind power’s leading challenge. One large turbine costs less to build than many small ones. Thus, the size of turbines keeps growing, as does the difficulty of moving them.

Today’s wind turbine components are among the largest of super loads.

• Blades can span 200 feet.
• Just half a turbine’s tower might be 15 feet wide and 120 feet long.
• Nacelles can exceed 200,000 lbs. (That includes the generator, gearbox and electrical apparatus.)

This isn’t your average flatbed cargo. Wind turbine transport is an exacting heavy haul job that requires custom rigs and experienced driver/support teams. It also calls for extensive planning, scouting and permitting.

All in all, delivery of a large wind turbine may call for a caravan of 7 to 10 trucks. While some pull standard lowboys and drop decks, most haul highly specialized trailers. Three transport the blades, while another moves the nacelle. Three to four carry tower sections. Additionally, one or two may transport smaller components.

Moreover, you need up to 60 trucks if you’re shipping six turbines at a time. Only a team of professional heavy haul drivers can get everything to the destination on time.
