Women in Trucking Find Both Here

women in trucking

The women in trucking are today’s pioneers. They’re tirelessly blazing a trail to better opportunities, pay and working conditions.

At Lone Star, others already have cleared that path for you – with character and class. We hire professional women drivers who have OTR experience and encourage their advancement – without hesitation.

That’s because we know women are among this industry’s most skilled professionals. If anyone needs convincing, then we introduce them to our female drivers. And, of course, we show them the data:

    • Women truck drivers are safer than their male counterparts in every statistically significant safety behavior. As a result, female drivers are less likely to be involved in crashes.1
    • On average, female truck drivers also
      1. Have fewer rollovers and rear-end collisions than men,
      2. Log more miles,
      3. Accumulate far less dwell (or detention) time and
      4. Stay with their respective carriers longer.2

The most compelling evidence, though, is anecdotal. Carriers who employ women drivers report3 that they form stronger relationships with customers. As a group, they’re more careful with their equipment and better at completing paperwork.

So, it stands to reason that we’d love to see more women in trucking – especially in Lone Star cabs! That’s why we’re thrilled by a recent uptick in applications from female drivers. We’re confident that when you get to know us, you’ll want to apply for one of our flatbed company driver jobs, too!

Paula’s Point of View

American Trucker Magazine recently asked three of Lone Star’s female drivers and CFO Kristi Williams for their take on the challenges faced by today’s women in trucking.

All agreed that misconceptions loom the largest. Many people still believe that trucking jobs – especially flatbed and heavy haul jobs – are men’s work.

“I’ve heard ‘A woman shouldn’t be doing this.’ ‘It’s not your place.’ ‘You shouldn’t be out here doing a man’s job, and certainly shouldn’t be doing a man’s job better than him,” said Paula, one of Lone Star’s seasoned professionals.

Paula became a truck driver in 2005 and joined the Lone Star team in July 2015. She’s part of our elite four-axle tractor fleet, qualified to haul freight of any width, length or weight.

As Paula and the others told American Trucker, they earn more by taking on big jobs – including fighting against stereotypes. At Lone Star, they’ve had the opportunity to prove they’re exceptionally good at that.

About Lone Star Transportation

1. Equal opportunities and exceptional earnings

A single, clearly defined career ladder

In trucking, drivers make more when they haul big, specialized loads. Expert Lone Star drivers – men and women alike – carry the largest cargo in highly demanding niche markets.

Most of Lone Star’s women drivers started with dry van jobs. They loved the trucking life but longed for something out of the box. The physical and technical demands of flatbed driver jobs appealed to them.

Then they discovered Lone Star.

      • Our customers present all the challenges a driver could want.
      • We provide load securement training to experienced OTR drivers – for free.
      • Did we mention that we also pay you and cover all expenses during orientation?
      • After training, you enter our career advancement program straightaway.
      • As you take on more challenging loads, you move up into higher pay scales.

Lone Star drivers earn between $65,000 and $100,000+ per year. Find out how you can advance to the truck driving jobs that pay the most.

2. A culture of smart, safe driving

women in truckingWomen in trucking, safely at home on the road

We start with a fleet of specialized trailers that are the envy of the industry. To pull them, we assign you a late-model Kenworth tractor equipped for your comfort. (You add the personal touches that make it feel like home.)

We make sure you drive reliable equipment of which you’re proud. We pay for three truck and trailer washes every 30 days, then invest in regular maintenance to protect you against breakdowns.

If something does go wrong on the road, your safety Is our top priority. An attentive dispatch team supports you round the clock, working hard to keep you secure while getting your truck up and running.

Don’t worry about being pressured into dangerous situations, either. We’re committed to maintaining Lone Star’s excellent safety record. Not only do we honor our safest driver every month, but we also award cash or prizes to all those with accident-free years.

We reward efficient drivers, too. Our quarterly fuel bonus program pays cash bonuses to those who help us contain costs.

3. An adventurous lifestyle, with the support of family

The open-road challenge of your choice

Learn to tackle over-sized freight. Become an expert in one of our specialty markets, too. If you’re free to spend extra time on the road and are looking for the ultimate test (with the best pay), then consider working up to extreme over-dimensional loads.

Embark on longer cross-country adventures confident that we have your back.

      1. Our dispatchers support you 24/7 on the road. Meanwhile, we keep your worries to a minimum with guaranteed pay and weekly direct deposit.
      2. We also work to get you home when you need to be there. We’re flexible when it comes to home time, helping you schedule around birthdays, anniversaries and other special events.
      3. Most importantly, we’re there for you if a crisis occurs while you’re on the road. We’re known for taking care of a driver as well as her truck in the event of a family emergency.

woman in truckingOur drivers and their welfare absolutely come first at Lone Star. We’re a family here.
– Kristi Williams, Chief Financial Officer

4. Commitment to professionalism

Expecting all our drivers to meet a higher standard

Lone Star drivers love challenges, but not recklessness.

Professional drivers hold the public’s safety in their hands. They’re entrusted with critical, high-value freight, too. The larger the equipment and load, the bigger the responsibility.

For this reason, we hold ourselves to the same high standards that measure the performance of train engineers, ship captains and airline pilots. If you’re a serious transportation professional, you’ll fit right in at Lone Star.

5. A path to long-term financial security

A better bet for professional women in trucking

Women in trucking come to Lone Star for many different reasons, but fair compensation probably is the most important of all. Our pay and benefits package steers drivers further down the road to financial security.

      1. A high-paying flatbed trucking job increases your earnings as an OTR driver. (Of course, our career advancement program helps grow them even more.)
      2. Guaranteed pay, deposited weekly – directly to your account – provides a consistent, reliable income stream.
      3. You work for a stable, well-run organization with a bright future. Lone Star is one of the country’s premier specialized heavy haul carriers. Furthermore, as a subsidiary of Daseke, Inc., Lone Star shares the resources of the largest open deck/specialty transportation company in North America.
      4. One of the best benefits packages in the industry protects you and your family. We even offer a free health insurance option.
      5. As a member of the Lone Star family, you enjoy access to the supportive programs of the TEXR Foundation. (See Reason #4 of our 12 reasons to apply for one of our flatbed driver jobs.)
      6. Our 401(k) retirement plan (with generous company matching contributions, each fully vested upon payment) helps you save for the day you decide to pull off the road for good.
